UMMA: The Journal of Contemporary Literature and Creative Arts is a Senate-approved biannual publication jointly operated by the department of Literature, and Creative Arts in the College of Humanities of the University of Dar es Salaam. The main objective of the journal is to stimulate and encourage debate on key themes in Literature and the Creative Arts. Two years after the establishment of the Department of Literature in 1964 as part of the University of East Africa, a journal/magazine known as Darlite started in 1966 primarily as a students’ literary magazine. In 1970, its name changed to Umma: A Magazine for Original Writing, which has since been superseded by the present name. The journal uses DOI (Digital Object Identifier) from Crossref and is indexed under EBSCO (Complementary Index and is set to be listed under "Litbase" [Literature Database]).
